There’s no questioning Airbnb is an enormous, successful company. They’ve seen incredible growth, especially in the last few years. And with an upcoming IPO, it appears the success is just getting started.

They recently announced a new type of booking known as ‘Airbnb Adventures’, multi-day tours building off of their one-day “Airbnb Experiences”. Now it’s not only your property you can offer, you can offer a full experience tour!

It’s a novel idea, and different than anything else out there. Most tours and experiences are run by large companies, streamlined and focused on getting the guests through their vacation. But this allows locals an opportunity to get into the market. It also gives a Airbnb owners an opportunity to shift their investment to a full-on business.

Again, it is a unique idea that appears to benefit everyone involved, the guests, the hosts, Airbnb. The only ones it doesn’t benefit are large tour companies, but we can live with that. However, it brings up the question, is Airbnb trying to do too much?

Airbnb’s bread and butter is bed and breakfast and they have taken that concept and grown it to immense success. But now they are so big that there are limitations to how much they can grow within that concept alone. It seems natural that they would start looking for other outlets. Combine that with an approaching IPO, and there’s even more incentive to be inventive.

But is it too much? In the words of Sabrina, “More isn’t always better, Linus. Sometimes it’s just more.” Airbnb is a vacation rental company, not a tour company. Is adding more than vacation rentals a dangerous move? Or can they be both a vacation-rental and a tour company.

I think they can do both PLUS so much more. In reality, Airbnb is not a vacation rental company. You, the Airbnb owners, are. Airbnb itself is a networking company, an aggregator. They connect people who want a place to stay with people who are willing to provide it. Airbnb Adventures are the same concept. They are connecting people who want a tour with people who are willing to provide them.
